Career planning and selection
Candidates will be coached to consider all possible career options available to them, taking into account their professional and life goals, their education, background, career experience and general skill sets. They will be encouraged to set and monitor long and short term goals.
Job search strategies and implementation
A personalised programme will be mutually agreed outlining job search goals . It is important that at a very challenging time, the coachee is not overwhelmed and is dealing effectively with goals that are specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time bound (SMART) in order to meet short term objectives. This helps to develop confidence and encourage resilience.
Creating a mission statement
The individual will be supported in creating a mission statement. This is the single most important part of a CV and calls upon all the discovery work carried out to date. It is also important to create the CV independently and to grow with it.
It helps to gain some self insight on the way and to overcome barriers that are discovered en route. Without completing this process, the chances of appearing convincing in an interview, especially when dealing with an experienced recruiter are much less likely if the CV has simply been prepared by someone else.
CV writing Techniques
Individuals will be coached on creating the body of their CV, so that they present themselves in the best possible light. They will be introduced to the concept of key word usage, so that they avoid the “maybe” pile, or worse the “reject“ pile. Candidates in today's technological world not only have to catch the human eye of the hard pressed recruiter but the digital eye of word recognition software programmes. With such large numbers of job seekers on the market, this offers a distinct advantage.
It is also important to consider the purpose of a CV. Is it an introduction to a professional career or is it a more comprehensive outline of past experience, particularly referring to a “technical” career.
Interview Techniques
Coaching will be given on the whole process from start to finish. The do's and don'ts of interviewing include:
- research strategies and preparation
- question preparation (responding and asking)
- mental preparation
- interview formats (telephone , individual, group, informal, panel, social)
- dress code
- body language
- role playing and appraisal
- salary negotiation
- follow up
- dealing with offers and rejection
Networking direct and indirect
Coachees will be introduced to all of the many aspects of modern networking. They will be encouraged and given strategies to maximise every opportunity, which, in today's increasingly competitive job market, will give them the vital edge needed to stay ahead:
- preparation of an elevator speech (60 second self presentation)
- direct networking (conferences, social, professional bodies etc)
- indirect networking (internet, professional groups e.g LinkedIn etc.)
Internet Research Techniques
The internet has revolutionised our lives and the way and speed in which we do things and exchange information. However, on top of the many benefits there are also some major pitfalls. To the unfamiliar, it can appear to be an overwhelming technological morass. Individuals will be coached in research skills such as the use of LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. and given some simple and basic tips, so that they can make the most of the internet for their job search strategies in a positive and secure way.
Researching potential employers and sectors
Hands on support will be offered to guide individuals in identifying potential employers by sector and geographic location. Coachees will also receive support on Executive Search organisations and their structures, and will be advised on job boards etc.
